Stephen Posted: Nov 11, 2009 at 04:29 AM EST

yes, because it makes cheerleaders happy when I say yes

Tabitha Posted: Oct 26, 2009 at 03:22 PM EDT

Cheerleading is definetly a sport i mean seriously we work our butts off just trying to perfect a routine

kjerstin Posted: Oct 26, 2009 at 02:26 PM EDT

yeah it is..sort of...lol

Alexandra Posted: Oct 23, 2009 at 10:06 AM EDT

I think it is a sport. I think that anything that takes anything physical is a sport.

Cindy Posted: Oct 21, 2009 at 05:00 AM EDT

Of course, it is a sport. Cheerleaders need to have the physical skills, talent and flexibility to do well.

korey Posted: Sep 30, 2009 at 12:19 PM EDT

yea cheerleading is a sport i cheer in the winter and its def a sport its tought its not pushing a sled but its still hard as anything

Brittni Posted: Sep 30, 2009 at 11:52 AM EDT

yes it is :) the only kind thats not is like the grade school cheerleading when they dont do anything tumbling or stunting.

Brandon Posted: Sep 29, 2009 at 09:19 AM EDT

cheerleading in comp is a sport but not on the sidelines

reed Posted: Sep 02, 2009 at 01:02 PM EDT

If you can sweat and get hurt its a sport

Ryne Posted: Jul 30, 2009 at 08:10 PM EDT

I think its a sport the cheerleaders at my school are really good and they have won more competitions then any other sport at are school and i have respect for them and i think that some of the football players that don't think it is should try it im a football player and so is my best friend and he also is a cheerleader for a place called top gun and i would like to see people tell him its not a sport

Kevin Posted: Jul 27, 2009 at 08:53 AM EDT

Yes it is a sport you have to dance,jump,....... if you can play it it can be a sport that for all sports out ther

John Posted: Jul 15, 2009 at 08:11 PM EDT

ok as me beingh a football player, i have respect for cheer. i think that Competitive Cheer is a sport, but as for Sideline, i dont really think you can call sideline a sport, but competitive is.

Angela Posted: Jul 15, 2009 at 09:59 AM EDT

cheerleading is such a sport. even though cheerleading on the sidelines may not be a sport- competition cheerleading is. i'm not a competition cheerleader right now but i know that they work out a lot during the school weeks..they practice everyday of the week till 6:00 or 6:30. and they run and do all kinds of work outs. it's a lot of strenuous activity so of course it's a sport :)

Alyssa Posted: Jul 06, 2009 at 08:30 PM EDT

i deff think its a sport. we compete an break a sweat too. we juss look better doin it ;)

rachel Posted: Jul 06, 2009 at 07:48 PM EDT

of course cheerleading is a sport! A lot of competitive cheerleading teams go to work outs with the football players and then go to a practice after that. We work just as hard if not harder then a lot of other teams considered sports.

:)

Sarah Posted: Jun 25, 2009 at 12:44 PM EDT

cheerleading is a sport and people who think its not i like to see them try it.

Montana Posted: Jun 25, 2009 at 01:14 AM EDT

hellll ya its a sport !

:D

Shaquille Posted: Jun 24, 2009 at 02:17 PM EDT

I say it's a sport when we go in for halftime our cheerleaders compete against the other schools and what would we do with the cheerleaders the games would be kinda boring

Jordan Posted: Jun 23, 2009 at 11:38 PM EDT

Yeah cheerleading is a sport. Not that I ever did it before but u got to lift and be agile to do all those moves and stuff. So yea I say it a sport.

Gabrielle Posted: Jun 23, 2009 at 10:41 PM EDT

yes its a sport...its just lik any other sport you go against other teams and you win championships...most ppl think it isn't a sport b.c they couldn't b one...lol

Kayla Posted: Jun 23, 2009 at 09:52 PM EDT

okay. even though i am a cheerleader myself, i have to say that just cheering on the sidelines doesnt count as much of a sport as competition cheerleading does. and i do both. many people dont realize how hard cheerleading is, and they never will until they actually experience it themselves. it does take just as much physical effort as football or other sports. and behind the mini skirts, bows, and makeup, are real athletes working just as hard as football players on friday nights.

Rachel Posted: Jun 10, 2009 at 10:12 AM EDT

cheering is the most demanding sport i've ever participated in. i've played basketball, run track, and played softball. i've been cheering for years. as you get older and your skills progress, stunts and tumbling get HARDER! MUCH HARDER! therefore, there's more of a risk to getting hurt. luckily, i don't have to put up with alot of people that don't think cheerleading is a sport. actually, in some cases, cheer teams win more trophies than the football, basketball, baseball, and soccer teams do. but thanks to everyone that gives cheerleading credit as a real sport! :)

Rachel Posted: Jun 10, 2009 at 10:08 AM EDT

thank you soo much :)

Devon Posted: Jun 04, 2009 at 05:06 PM EDT

wow for all the people who don't call cheer leading a sport deserve to get slapped. As a football player football wouldnt be the same with out them. They are just as athletic as us or any other sport out there. All the dancing all the stunts. Its such a dangerous thing when you get to the stunts throwing people in the air that's crazy how many of us football players would let someone throw them like 20 feet in the air and not know if your going to be safely caught back down. The cheers itself are not what make it a sport just the dancing and the stunts. In high school they have to follow the academic regulation to even be in it but they still don't consider it a sport. thats my opinion on it

michael Posted: May 26, 2009 at 09:35 PM EDT

cheerleading involves gymnastics. gymnastics is a sport. therefore cheerleading is a sport. plus cheerleading is the only sport where if you miss the catch you drop more than just a ball. you drop a person. although im inclined to believe its a sport because football wouldnt be the same without those beauties cheering us on.

Trevor Posted: May 19, 2009 at 03:02 AM EDT

its a sport, and scope out my page

john Posted: May 04, 2009 at 08:17 PM EDT

Well, seems to me it's a bit boundry blurring right? There's part of it that's sport and part of it that's performance. So I guess it's twice as hard!

Megan Posted: Mar 13, 2009 at 07:55 PM EDT

I'm going to have to agree with Haley cheerleading is in fact a sport!! We get hurt and we have coaches yelling at us just like all other sports and we do all the running and stretching and the practices. So why shouldnt cheerleading be consider a sport...

Haley Posted: Feb 17, 2009 at 11:27 PM EST

I personally have had 4 jammed fingers, 2 pulled nerves, a pulled hamstring, a pulled groin, and a sprained ankle because of the sport. My ankle will never be the same. I take bruises from falls and from flyers everyday. You do not have to be physically attractive to be a cheerleader. That's a stereotype. Competition cheerleaders are scored by judges. Gymnasts and ice skaters are scored by judges, so why can't cheerleading be a sport like them? And yeah! It's on ESPN. We have local, state, regional, national, and world competitions... and we are not a sport?

Haley Posted: Feb 17, 2009 at 11:27 PM EST

Did you know that cheerleading is the number one sport for injuries in females? Stop looking at sideline cheerleading and view competition. Check this video, they're the best cheerleading team in the world: Top Gun. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gKSiRxNhzX0 Tell me that's easy. Tell me you can't get hurt doing that. Cheerleading isn't pom-poms anymore. If it's so simple and it's only the stupid people that get hurt, why are there paramedics on standby at competitions? I have seen asthma attacks, panic attacks, pass outs, and many injuries due to cheerleading. It is dangerous.

Kelsey Posted: Feb 01, 2009 at 06:04 PM EST

umm no its not. they cheer on the sidelines while the real sport is playing. their like positive reinforcements.

RYAN Posted: Jan 12, 2009 at 09:03 AM EST

it is so a sport and anyone that thinks its not their gay because it is harder than it looks so for all those guy who think their tha shizz then try this and youll think different and all the girls that think cheerleaders are stuck up they just need to get to know the cheerleaders and you will see that we are the same as everyone else

Parker Posted: Jan 11, 2009 at 08:14 PM EST

And for those who don't think its dangerous. I tore my kidney last season and was in the hopspital for a month. We don't wear pads or helmets

Parker Posted: Jan 11, 2009 at 08:12 PM EST

The cheering part of it. Like the arm movements and such, i wouldn't call a sport. But when you get into stunting and tumbling, then yeah it is. Stunting is hard to get down and takes a lot of time and strength. And tumbling is pretty much gymnastics, which last time i checked is an olympic event. So the cheering part may not be, but the rest is. So yeah its a sport.

Toni Posted: Dec 31, 2008 at 04:42 PM EST

according to most of the population, dance= sport, gymnastics= sport, track= sport(jumps)

cheerleading mixes all of these together and also incorporates stunting, which is what gives us our uniqueness.

are you still sure it's not a sport?

Alec Posted: Dec 31, 2008 at 02:52 PM EST

does the fact that you have been cheering for 12 years make it a sport? i have been breathing fr 12 years is that a sport too??? lol its an activity not a sport. but that doesnt mean its not hard. but lets not make it out to be one of the hardest or most dagerous sports because its not even close

Elizabeth Posted: Dec 27, 2008 at 09:17 PM EST

yES CHEERLEAD IS SO A SPORT i HAVE BEEN A CHEERLEADER FOR 12 YEARS NOW

Tori Posted: Dec 27, 2008 at 03:26 PM EST

i think it depends on what KIND of cheer. like if it's allstar or any competitive cheer, like what i do, it is considered a sport because we compete as a team against another team to win. and it takes A LOT of strength, endurance, and technique to do it right. however, if it's just a high school team that only cheers at games, then it is just it's name. leading cheers. they are not competing. they are just there for entertainment and to support other teams.

Lance Posted: Dec 23, 2008 at 02:58 PM EST

Me being a competition cheerleader, I wiuld would say it all depends on your perspective. I think that it is for the fact that you have to spend so much time working on routines and stunts. It takes a very disciplined person to do it.

Maggie Posted: Dec 23, 2008 at 02:14 PM EST

I use to cheer and it takes alot of hardwork, physical strength, teamwork and dedication. It holds all the components of a sport. So yes it is a sport, and besides its on ESPN isn't it?

valerie Posted: Dec 22, 2008 at 04:06 PM EST

yeah it does take alot of hard work but over all it's alot of makeup, short skirts, and fake smiles so yeah it is a sport but not a sport that alot of people are ready to take seriously...BUT YEAH ITS A SPORT =)

valerie Posted: Dec 22, 2008 at 04:00 PM EST

i'm a lil iffy on if it's a sport or not...idk maybe maybe not...i might give it to you as a sport but on it being one of the most dangerous sports? sorry but no not even close on that one sport or not it's definitely not one of the most dangerous sports you can do, when cheerleaders start tackling each other then maybe lol

View (1) replies to this comment |

Jackie Posted: Dec 19, 2008 at 09:32 PM EST

Cheerleading is just an excuse for girls to wear mini skirts and dance like sluts. Sure it's dangerous but you're asking for injury if you willingly allow yourself to be thrown into the air.

View (3) replies to this comment |

Alec Posted: Dec 19, 2008 at 05:37 PM EST

And to everyone that says its dangerous..its definitely not. Sure you can tear muscles ad break bones, etc. but you can definitely control the outcome of that. The only way to do that is if you get dropped by your team or just do something you havent been taught to do which is stupid. Other sports you have a legitimte 0% control over getting hurt and no guarantee of being able to walk off the field on your own

View (1) replies to this comment |

Alec Posted: Dec 19, 2008 at 05:31 PM EST

Definitely not a sport. Definitely not dangerous. Definitely does not tak as much skill, strength, agility, speed, focus, or intelligence as other sports. sorry

Devon Posted: Dec 09, 2008 at 06:10 PM EST

Frankly, this depends where you are. Some schools will consider it a sport, and others a club. Why? It's determined by the demographics of the school. A school with many sports and a wide variety of students will tend to consider cheerleading a sport. A purely academic school with predominately brainy kids will consider it a club. Personally, having grown up in a small, sports-centered school, I believe that cheerleading is a sport, and quite possibly the most dangerous in either college or high school.

its a sport end of story

=)

Jessica Posted: Nov 17, 2008 at 03:20 PM EST

Of course its a sport, and cheerleaders are some of the most dynamic athletes on the planet!

Pamela Posted: Nov 16, 2008 at 11:19 AM EST

i think it is a sport they stunt and get more injuries than most things that consider themselves sports so cheerleading is too. we still do training like 'sports' do it is a different kind of training, therefore cheerleading is a sport end of story.

alexa Posted: Nov 14, 2008 at 04:45 PM EST

Okay for all you people who think cheerleading is not a sport, come to one of our practices. We work out just like every other sport, we run, do push ups, sit ups. but instead of lifting weights we lift people. honestly it takes a lot of muscle and techniqe to be able to do this. Cheerleading isn't all about CHEERING! it's about stunts too.

Shannon Posted: Nov 14, 2008 at 04:29 PM EST

Cheerleading is definitely a sport! Who ever thinks it it not is ignorant. WE need to stay fit, we work as a team, we comet for medals and trophies, and we practice. Everything all other sports do. Sports keep you fit and active and cheerleading definitely does this. I'd like to see some of you haters do a round off back handspring back tuck or be in a pyramid.

Becca Posted: Nov 14, 2008 at 08:28 AM EST

cheerleading, unless it is competivtive is not a sport. i repeat CHEERLEADING IS NOT A SPORT!!!

Nicole Posted: Nov 14, 2008 at 01:10 AM EST

yeah it is they r even making it a olympic sport!!!! so totallly it is!!!!

Jason Posted: Nov 11, 2008 at 07:11 PM EST

Yea its a sport I think they get more injuries than our football team. We have two guys with severe knee injuries but the cheerleaders have four girls out with ACL and MCL tears.

Shakeem Posted: Nov 11, 2008 at 02:59 PM EST

rewinds, doubles, cupies, concussions, teamwork, competitiveness

yeah its a sport

Shakia Posted: Nov 11, 2008 at 07:43 AM EST

Hell Yeah! Cheerleading is a sport. Those of you who say it's not you try being tossed up in the air being grabbed by the waist hoisted up brining your leg up and all. It takes commitment, dedication, great sprit, and a competitive sprit to be labeled as a cheerleader.

Michelle Posted: Oct 29, 2008 at 08:12 PM EDT

of course cheerleading is a sport. i really hate how cheerleading gets the bad reputation. i know our high school team is mainly girls just jumping around, getting the privilege to wear skimpy skirts to school, but competitive cheerleading is a sport. not only do competitive cheerleaders tumble, they also stunt which in my team is all girl so there is no extra help from guys, and they also have to cheer, and dance, fit into a 2 minute and 30 second routine, which can be rough. and while other sports are running with balls, we are lifting people in the air, which is much harder then running with a ball in my eyes. it just really fusterates me that people just think its a prissy sport and that we dont do anything. and cheerleading is one of the most dangerous SPORTS there is.

tatiyana Posted: Oct 28, 2008 at 05:18 PM EDT

yes it is a sport! im in it, and its a LOT harder than people think!

Jeramiah Posted: Oct 26, 2008 at 01:23 PM EDT

Yes Cheerleading is a sport!...the university of maryland ( Go Terps) has a competive allgirl Cheerleading team that is declared as a sport

kaci Posted: Oct 25, 2008 at 12:44 PM EDT

yeess! cheerleading is a sporrt! we do the same stuff and other athlete does. we runn , we practice and we plaay. CHEERLEADING IS DEFFINATELY A SPORT!

alison Posted: Oct 25, 2008 at 10:34 AM EDT

Ok, well first off this controversy is completely stupid and *#&$ %%&*. Why do football, basketball, soccer and the other teams even say anything. They are just trying to cause a reaction and guess what? they get it. As a cheerleader myself i am sick and tired of the $!%* *##%. I'd like to see them get their !!#!& out on that floor and do it. Either fall out of a stunt and get seriously hurt or get landed on all the time! It is @!@! #$$!. Cheerleaders work their $&*!$ off for their routinee and yet we still get bitched at it for it. If all those other SPORT players hated cheerleading so much then why do they come to the competition! Honestly, cheerleading is the hardest sport i have donee. You actually have to work as a teamm! and if it wasnt a sport then why is is on ESPN! hmm. Think about that!

shanterria Posted: Oct 24, 2008 at 12:35 PM EDT

i think cheerleading is a sport because we do all thing things that other sports such as track football basketball soccer and many more do

Maggie Posted: Oct 22, 2008 at 08:43 PM EDT

of course it is! we have a varsity and jv squad. we sweat, we run, we condition, we lift, we cry, we have our victories and defeats. its about skill, balance, precision and timing, teamwork, strength and endurance. NOW tell me its not a sport.....

Danielle Posted: Oct 22, 2008 at 08:36 PM EDT

Ofcorse it is! I`ve been a cheerleader for 8 years and never once has it been easy!! Cheerleading is rated one of the most dangerous sports in the world!! so if thats not considered a sport! i dont know what is... most people have no idea what it takes to be a cheerleader.. what we do almost everyday to stay fit!!

Desiree Posted: Oct 22, 2008 at 07:55 PM EDT

Cheerleading is a sport. There is alot of athleticism needed to be a cheerleader and loads of hard work gets put into the routines and cheers. And for those of you who think it isn't a sport bc the people don't get hurt, that's totally not true. I got my nose broken and this girl on a different squad in my city broke her collar bone. So yeah, deff a sport

Sheree Posted: Oct 19, 2008 at 11:57 PM EDT

SPORT!!!! FER SURE!!!!! Anything you gotta work that hard to do is a sport.

Carleen Posted: Oct 15, 2008 at 01:11 PM EDT

i think it is a sport if its proffesional because they train, practice and workout just like any other sport!!! but then again you dont have to be a proffessional team because they do almost the same thing!! so i guess it is a sport!!!

zach Posted: Oct 14, 2008 at 09:04 AM EDT

well i beleive it is cause you train hard to learn the moves you do and ppl come to watch you do it and you help out by cheering on other teams so ya it is a sport

Victor Posted: Oct 08, 2008 at 12:09 AM EDT

Cheerleading is absolutely NOT a sport. It's merely sideline entertainment. It's girls in short, tight clothes bouncing up and down. That's it! Girls have been fooled into thinking it's a sport and that's great. If you don't believe me, ponder this - football players get paid millions while cheerleaders do it for free. Ask any guy and he can name five football players with no problem but five cheerleader names? Nope! You're just eye candy. I could care less how much effort goes into practice or how much you've "sacrificed" for the privilege of "shakin' what your mama gave ya". Oh yeah, if you get injured, just get out of the way and let the next hot girl take over.

Oh, and for all of you who are inevitably going to bring up male cheerleaders - one, they don't exist in the "pros"and two, have you noticed they're completely covered head to toe while girls outfits leave little to the imagination (just the way I likes it!)?

Dream on girls - it's not a sport.

Holly Posted: Oct 07, 2008 at 05:42 PM EDT

I am in cheerleading and it is a sport because we have to run like that football players an we have to throw people in the air and catch them and we also have to lift and have to practice the cheers to make them perfect or else would would loose. We also complete in comptions and we do are best just like every other sport does. Cheerleading is a dangousous sport and we have to always be care when we do stunts because it is easy to drop someone if you dont know what to do. Our team has drop somone and they did get hurt but not that bad so if youdo think cheerleading is a sport i would think again.

Samantha Posted: Sep 30, 2008 at 10:23 AM EDT

Yes i do think cheerleading is a sport mainly because we practice like any other sport we go to compete with other schools. we practice just as much as any sport would.

victor Posted: Sep 29, 2008 at 10:53 PM EDT

cheer is a sport obv isnt this site created fer athletes to be an athlete you have to be in a sport

Christine Posted: Sep 29, 2008 at 07:46 PM EDT

haha. no, its not a sport.

brittany Posted: Sep 29, 2008 at 04:54 PM EDT

cheerleading is a sport in my opnion. i cheer so to me it is a sport we practice like any other sport.

lexus Posted: Sep 28, 2008 at 12:06 AM EDT

ok it is simple.. look up the definition of a sport in the dictionary cheerleading fits... so get over it ♥

Jonny Posted: Sep 26, 2008 at 06:44 PM EDT

Cheerleading is as much a sport *@! football and all those other things. Cheerleading is more than yelling Go Fight Win! In order to be a really good cheerleader u need to eat right, practice hard, lift wieghts, just like football, and throw people in the air! how can that not be a sport?

Marquitta Posted: Sep 22, 2008 at 09:53 AM EDT

First of all cheerleading is a sport.Through all the stunts, flipa, and makin sur everything is on point is hard work and just like otha sports u have to stay n shape and still wake up soar in the morning.

JUSTIN Posted: Sep 21, 2008 at 08:50 PM EDT

cheerleading is a sport. because u practice 2 compete. when you compete u win or loose. juss like any other sport. or (tie)

Mike Posted: Sep 19, 2008 at 07:29 AM EDT

yah cheering is a sport becuase if u think about it u all come together as one..and if one person messes up the cheer then it makes u all look bad...so its a sport becuase u practice to perfect in compition or games

yea cheerleading is a sport

this is for all u ppl that think cheerleading is not a sport...take it and shove it up ur u no wat...cuz it is a sport and we work just as hard as ne other sport...in every sport u have to remember plays...well cheerleading...we have to remember cheers just as many plays if not more...we get up in the morning for practice not after skool...yes some teams have 2 to for two-a-days...but thats only for lyk a week or two...ours is all year long...we sweat...work hard...we are just as strong...so shove it...

Cassidy Posted: Sep 16, 2008 at 04:05 PM EDT

Cheerleading is DEFFINATELY a sport. it drives me crazy how people think its just girls jumping up and down screaming and hollering for a team they love. Thats about as basic as it gets. But, theres a lot more too it than that. Cheerleaders require strength, and they have to be in good shape. Cheerleaders tumble, and put their lives in the arms of three others, while their flying 20 ft in the air. i really cant explain it, but cheerleaders work a lot harder than most people think. And whoh do you think is stronger....a male cheerleader or a foorbal player?? okay, so a male cheerleader doesnt have to be tackled on a field, but most footbal players have all their muscles in their legs. Half of them probably dont have the strength or the sklill to throw a girl 20 ft in the air, and then catch her.

View (1) replies to this comment |

brandie Posted: Sep 16, 2008 at 12:48 PM EDT

cheerleading is a sport kuz its not just throwing ur arms and kickin ur legs.... cheerleaders also have to have the strength to lift people into the air and throw them up in the air and then catch them... i would like to see any volleyball team or cross country team lift a girl and then throw her up 20 ft in the air!!!!!

View (2) replies to this comment |

brandie Posted: Sep 16, 2008 at 12:45 PM EDT

Cheerleading is a sport.... we work just as hard as some other sports, we get hurt like any other sport, we even sweat! We practice just like any other sport does... just some less than others but we do practice. We get up at 6 and practice til 8.... how can anybody say its not a sport....

kally Posted: Sep 15, 2008 at 10:55 AM EDT

I think cheerleading should be considered a sport just because of the simple fact that its requires stunts, yelling, jumps, ect. and not mention the fact that it is a little bit more dangerous the football, basketball, volleyball, ect. because those sports don't require you to be thrown 20 ft in the air and land in a twist craddle. but it's simply an opinion.

Marina Posted: Sep 14, 2008 at 05:52 PM EDT

I definitely don't think cheer leading is a sport. Except for those all star teams. That is a sport but high school cheer leading... screw that. I hate cheerleaders too. so. they cheer at my volleyball games and its completely pointless and we don't even want them there. They don't work anywhere near as hard as real sports like, volleyball, basketball, football... etc. its not a freaken sport.

there is different types of cheering there is allstar cheering and high school cheering and middle school cheering idk about middle school because i've neva done it in ms but i think that highschool competitive cheer is a sport not so much sideline cheer and allstar cheer is DEFINATLY A SPORT their tumbling passes r amazing there stunts r amazing their transitions r amazing and their incredibly flexible and their dance is amazing and they have to stay with great facials the whole time and if u snt believe me then go to youtube and type in top gun and or california allstars and prove me wrong. so overall in general cheerleading is a sport

I think that cheerleading is a sport because it requires just as much work and ambition as any other sport that is played.

martekia Posted: Sep 10, 2008 at 02:17 PM EDT

i think it is becouse it is a lot of work just like all the other sports and who will cheer most of the sports on cheerleaders so yes it is

For example, the Olympics is a political sporting event. It has athletes performing magnificent feats that most humans could not hope to accomplish. However some of its "sports" may not be sports to all viewers. Diving to many is a sport, yet ping pong would not be considered in the same category. By the definition you have given however it is viewed the other way. I guess in the long run, I'm just saying the question isn't "is it a sport," but instead "What qualifies something to be a sport." By the definitions I have found everything from video games to triathlons are sports. We just need to loosen our high-strung, fearful of change, minds and accept eachother's opinions.

While I agree that the argument is repeating I would have to say I disagree with your rationalization. I have already read your previous post and several of the replies, and still hold true to my OPINION(this is directed to people becoming to upset about this debate, not you personally Andy). For example Dictionary.com claims sports to be: "an athletic activity requiring skill or physical prowess and often of a competitive nature, as racing, baseball, tennis, golf, bowling, wrestling, boxing, hunting, fishing, etc." also "diversion; recreation; pleasant pastime." and "Physical activity that is governed by a set of rules or customs and often engaged in competitively."

If this is the case then this debate isn't truly legitimate. The truth would then be that people simply hold fast to their idea of a sport and tend to fear change, even subconsciously.

I think it's only fair that cheerleading is a sport, and that goes for poms as well. The only reason I am saying that is because they compete. And this is coming from someone who doesn't get support for their own activity being considered a sport.

cheer is most definately a sport! competitive cheer is at least. i mean we have to tumble, jump, stunt, yell, nd dance all at da same time while keepin believable facials in place!

Kimberly Posted: Sep 03, 2008 at 07:56 PM EDT

Heck yea its a sport. Some of you people consider yoga, or golf a sport. In golf, all you have to do is hit a ball into a hole. ANYONE CAN DO THAT!! In cheer, we lift atheletes while you lift weights. The person we throw (aka flyer) life is in our hands. Do you happen to know how many injuries there are in cheer? ALOT! And when your injured its not just a broken ankle or arm. Usually you land on your head and are parilyzed or die. Its not something that you can recover from. IT CHANGES YOUR LIFE! So dont even get me started if cheer is a sport or not cuz you will be shot where you are standin cuz i have alot of points that i am proving. Theres a difference between us and other sports. My WHOLE team has a 6 pack. We have enormous arms and legs, and i am dead right sure i could beat you in any arm wrestle. We throw standing fulls with no warm-up. We can tumble AMAZINGLY! AND we know how to work as a team. Hence forth the saying came, If cheer were easy it would be called football. BEAT THAT!

lyra Posted: Sep 03, 2008 at 05:43 PM EDT

danielle Posted: Sep 03, 2008 at 05:17 PM EDT

connie Posted: Sep 02, 2008 at 01:36 AM EDT

depends on wat kinda team u have. if ur team does those flips other stuff then ya. but if its just people on the sidelines clapping and sayin go knights or watever then no its not a sport

kadey Posted: Sep 01, 2008 at 03:09 PM EDT

Tyler Posted: Aug 26, 2008 at 09:39 PM EDT

well duh people dont think its a sport. theres movies nd tv shows that give us bad names but in all honesty unless u kno how hard we work u hve no rite to say we arent a sport cuz we work very hard and probably harder than most sports.

Rachel Posted: Aug 26, 2008 at 05:44 PM EDT

I think that cheerleading is a sport. You work just as hard as any other sport.

Andy Posted: Aug 25, 2008 at 05:31 PM EDT

Thank you justin, what no one realizes is that they are all repeating the same exact argument..."It's hard, i practice a lot, and i'm in better shape than you". Don't forget what we are debating...Is cheerleading a sport. yes or no. No, it is not, If your math homework is hard, is that a sport? Is it a sport to be an abercrombie model and be in shape? Can you say that lifting another girl above your head is a sport? the answer is no, to all of these. Thank you to those whom observed the facts, not emotions and rationalizations.
